How to protect your content from screen recordings?

The online video content industry has always been vulnerable to piracy and unauthorized usage. Screen recording, or “cam-version,” is one of the most common ways of pirating video content. The threat from this type of piracy has only grown manifolds in the current times when most film releases are being made on OTT platforms. Online content can be illegally recorded by either using a screen-recording app or a camera. However, there are multiple ways by which one can prevent or minimize the unauthorized recording of premium copyrighted content.

Usually, multi-DRM encryption is the best and most efficient way of protecting content from screen-recordings, but web browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox, which have software level Widevine DRM cannot be protected by multi-DRM solutions alone. Screen recording from browsers can be prevented by applying a separate anti capturing solution to detect if any recording tool is being used when DRM content is played. Several anti-capture solutions also help block screen recording that uses remote and virtual environments.

Another way to prevent screen recording is to not support the browsers vulnerable to screen recording. However, this alternative might not be convenient for end users who are more familiar with these browsers. A way around this is to limit the resolution of the content served on them in order to minimize the damage caused by leakage.

Content can also be illegally recorded using an external camera or camcorder. This method of content piracy cannot be prevented by DRM solutions and is further aggravated by sophisticated recording devices which can record video playback at high resolutions. Another way in which the content can be protected from screen recordings is via a visible watermarking solution. It works by displaying the ID of the service user or the IP address of the client device on the screen. Besides displaying the user information on the screen, it can minimize illegal leakage itself. The only lacuna with this solution is that it can hamper the user experience and be removed by video editing.

Forensic watermarking offers a more advanced solution to copyright infringement through cam recording. In this solution, user information is inserted into video frames and cannot be removed even by re-encoding, changing the aspect ratio, or filtering.
